Archaeologist: And here you can see the bones of a fishman, circa 44BCE.
Student: How do you know it's a man?
Archaeologist: As with humans, the gender of the skeleton is easy to identify based on the girth and shape of the hips.
Student: ... what hips?
Archaeologist: Look, it's my discovery, it's a he, alright?

Beautiful and deeply thought provoking.  I love the shading and texture of the colors you used.

I hope that you have a great and blessed day!

You say it's a fishMAN in the title but you say mermaid in a hashtag.

So what is it? Was this merperson a male or female? XD

I'd say merfolk in general would be called Mermaid(s), male AND female. Humans have named species in weird ways before, so...why not stick to it? XD

Actually, mermaids are all female and merMEN.merboys are the males.
And merpeople are them all, if it ain't broke don't fix it. ;)

I know that, of course. You didn't understand what I said at all.
What I said was: Humans have the habit of choosing weird names for all kinds of creatures. It would not be surprising that humankind would name the entire species "Mermaids" since the females were the first thing they discovered, know and are generally more interested in. As the females are probably also the dominant gender and are much more dangerous than males (based on siren stories and all that folklore).
So, naming the entire species, male AND female, after what people thought of as name for the female gender would make a lot of sense.
There is also the high possibility that the entire breed has no gender. Which would make it unnecessary to choose another name than Mermaid anyway.
Besides, the term Merpeople is not used in general. The term that is often used besides just Mermaids is Merfolk. Merpeople is a term used in the Harry Potter franchise. (Google both Merpeople and Merfolk, Merfolk has waaaaay more hits.)

I know there is at least 1 species of creature that humans named after only one part of the gender, but I forgot what critter it was. But just google strange animal names and you'll get the idea. Humans are not the best at naming anything. Take the Mountain Chicken for example. XD

Actually the female merpeople/merfolk weren't necessarily the first encountered.

But since most sailors were men and had long voyages at sea without female companionship.
They started to imagine manatees as mermaids... XD

They were. The first stories about merfolk of the pretty kind (not the Merman of a MUCH different appearance+behavior: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merman ) was based (and is in all stories) always a female. There are no stories about pretty "fishboys". Only lovely Mermaids and scary Mermen as far as first stories/encounters go.

The sailor stories of the 'lonely sailor' type are only "loosely" connected to Merfolk in my opinion. I'm pretty sure the idea of the horny sailors seeing manatees and thinking "Damn, I'd tap that!" might be true as fat women were a rather big part of beauty standard back in the day. Talk about change of taste, huh. X'D

Those are just the recorded stories, hence I said "the female merpeople/merfolk weren't NECESSARILY the first encountered" ;)
